The Gambling Industry in the Spanish Market

Gaming in Spain is huge, from the craziness of the Christmas lottery (more than 73% of the adult population play every year) to the big numbers made each week by the National Lottery, Euromillones and Quiniela, among others. In fact, the country received 256 million Euros of taxes from Lottery winnings during the first half of 2020.

The Spanish market is strongly regulated by several national laws and organisations, such as the State (Lotteries), the Spanish Gambling Act 13/2011, the DGOJ (General Directorate of Gaming Management), CONFAD (National Commission to combat the manipulation of sports competitions and betting fraud) and also by European bodies like the European Gaming & Betting Association.

But, after the closure of casinos, betting shops and other venues during the COVID-19 pandemic, the state of alarm and the ban of any gambling advertising… How is the current situation and what are the main betting trends in the Spanish gambling industry?

Online casinos

The first betting trend we will talk about is online casinos. Currently, several traditional casinos are migrating from retail to their online versions, which include a great variety of games like slots, baccarat, poker, blackjack, live dealer games, and roulette.

While land-based casinos are regulated and controlled by each region or “Comunidad Autónoma”, online betting in Spain has a national-level regulation, and some recent laws from 2018 reducing 5% taxes have made this channel even more attractive for operators.

Nowadays, more than 80% of the country's online gaming operators are part of the Spanish Digital Gambling Association, Jdigital, a non-profit association that looks after the interests of the online gaming industry in Spain, showing how committed the industry is to the development of this business trend.
