Gaming in Spain is huge, from the craziness of the Christmas lottery (more than 73% of the adult population play every year) to the big numbers made each week by the National Lottery, Euromillones and Quiniela, among others. On top of this, the Spanish market keeps growing, presenting an interesting landscape, both for local and international operators.
In fact, the country received 256 million Euros of taxes from Lottery winnings during the first half of the year 2020.
The Spanish market is strongly regulated by several national laws and organisations, such as the State (Lotteries), the Spanish Gambling Act 13/2011, the DGOJ (General Directorate of Gaming Management), CONFAD (National Commission to combat the manipulation of sports competitions and betting fraud) and also by European bodies like the European Gaming & Betting Association.
But, after the closure of casinos, betting shops and other venues during the COVID-19 pandemic, the state of alarm and the ban of any gambling advertising… How is the current situation and what are the main betting trends in the Spanish gambling industry?
The first betting trend we will talk about is online casinos. Currently, several traditional casinos are migrating from retail to their online versions, which include a great variety of games like slots, baccarat, poker, blackjack, live dealer games, and roulette.
While land-based casinos are regulated and controlled by each region or “Comunidad Autónoma”, online betting in Spain has a national-level regulation, and some recent laws from 2018 reducing 5% taxes have made this channel even more attractive for operators.
Nowadays, more than 80% of the country's online gaming operators are part of the Spanish Digital Gambling Association, Jdigital, a non-profit association that looks after the interests of the online gaming industry in Spain, showing how committed the industry is in the development of this business trend.
Another major trend in the Spanish gambling industry is the increasing presence of casino games. This segment, according to the DGOJ, grew in 2019 in Spain with an annual variation rate of 14.93%, specially due to slot machines −which accounted for 54.47% of the casino gaming and had an annual variation of 20.58%.
During 2020, this vertical also grew by 22.55% in the second quarter, compared to the first quarter of the year. This happened thanks to live roulette and slots, which had a quarterly variation of 28.92% and 19.88% respectively.
For Spinmatic, 2020 is being a year with a strong focus on the Spanish jurisdiction, where the company plans to start operating very soon.
“We are very enthusiastic about offering our products on the Spanish market. Our plan is to continue to grow through new partnerships and launching new and innovative games and tools. Our goal is to start operating in every country in the world someday,” said the company’s Manager Director, Norbert Mathies, in an interview with Sector del Juego last May.
The company already has its games certified to be offered in the Spanish jurisdiction, which are now in the integration process.
Spinmatic has also partnered with some important Spanish operators like Reta and Mondobets, and it expects to introduce important innovations and specific games during 2021.
